Abstract

Rattans (canes) and bamboos play important roles in the lives of millions of people all over Asia. These resources have many useful applications in everyday living, particularly in rural areas, contributing to the socioeconomic development of the people. The growing popularity of rattan and bamboo furniture, as well as the use of bamboo as a substitute for timber, has created a flourishing export market. Their extensive use, however, has resulted in over exploitation, bringing to the fore the issue of their sustainability. In many regions, the important commercial species have been seriously depleted as the rapid exploitation continnues unabated. This situation, if left untouched, could have severe economic and social repercussions
