Abstract

Forest Research in India is carried out by government organizations, Agricultural Universities, and private sector. The private sector concentrate on problem solving and adaptive research with immediate application potential. The private sector builds its success on the foundations laid by public sector organisations in basic research and in personnel. In scientific publications, however the contribution of the private sector is marginal. In the private sector there are many NGOs, which share the characters of public sector organisations. Therefore a better classification would be profit oriented and public interest oriented. Profit oriented organisations can be encouraged to invest in low-risk research with patentable and marketable results. Public interest oriented organisations should be supported in conducting public goods research. Mechanisms for information sharing and networking is needed for a harmonious development of forestry research in India
