Dr. Balakrishnan grew up in the Western Ghats, where his exposure to wildlife sparked a keen interest in them. He studied Zoology in college and earned a doctoral degree from Bharathiar University through the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology & Natural History, focusing on the ecology of the Grey-headed Bulbul, endemic to the region. After a post-doctoral position, he joined NSS College Manjeri as an Assistant Professor. He later moved to the Division of Conservation Biology at Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden & Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram. Since 2018, Dr. Balakrishnan has served as a Scientist at the Kerala Forest Research Institute, where he leads the Department of Wildlife Biology and coordinates the Centre for Citizen Science and Biodiversity Informatics, focusing on science-based tools for wildlife and biodiversity conservation.
