Extension and Training Division of KFRI offers specialised training courses in tropical forestry to meet the requirements of various stakeholders. Each training course has a limited number of seats, which can be reserved upon payment of the training fee. It will also be possible to provide tailor-made training depending on the specific needs of the stakeholders. The medium of instruction for all the training courses is English. KFRI is an approved training centre of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, for the compulsory training courses and workshops for the officers of the Indian Forest Service. Various state forest departments have also sponsored candidates for several training courses in the past, including overseas participants from Myanmar. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Ethiopia, and Uganda have taken different training courses.
KFRI extension programs are meant for the transfer of technology to various stakeholders in different aspects of tropical forestry like forest management, forest seed management, medicinal plant cultivation, environmental impact assessment, biodiversity monitoring and evaluation, remote sensing and GIS, root-trainer technology, clonal propagation, tree improvement and statistical application in forestry. The Division has excellent facilities for conducting training programmes, including lecture halls, trainee hostel, and vehicles for field trips.
The Institute has well-qualified and trained scientists with national and international exposure. In addition to its scientists, renowned experts from other reputed institutions/universities are engaged as resource persons/guest faculty.
Training courses are conducted in a well-equipped Training & Extension Centre with a modem lecture hall, seminar hall, meeting room and computer hail with internet facility. Accommodation is provided in the air-conditioned International Trainees Hostel. An air-conditioned minibus is also available for local travel and field trips. The Institute has well-equipped laboratories, a computerised library, a herbarium, an insect collection, a wildlife museum, nurseries and a live collection of bamboo, rattans, palms, medicinal plants and an arboretum. Kerala Forest Seed Centre, Teak Museum and Bioresources Nature Park are other attractions for the visitors.
The course fee is shown against each course. An additional 18% will be collected as service tax payable to the Government of India. The fee, payable in advance, covers tuition, lecture notes, boarding, lodging, field visits, and transportation during training. The candidate or sponsor will have to bear expenditures towards insurance coverage, medical expenses, and onward and return travel. Applicants are advised to obtain funds or sponsorship to attend the training course well in advance.
