Hands-on workshop on Closed Biosphere Design

In celebration of the Golden Jubilee, the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) hosted a hands-on workshop on Closed Biosphere Design at the Extension & Training Centre, KSCSTE-KFRI, Peechi. The workshop, which attracted environmental enthusiasts, students, and professionals alike, provided participants with a unique opportunity to learn the art and science behind creating self-sustaining ecosystems in closed environments.
Facilitated by experts Manjusha Remith and Kiran Kannan, the session guided attendees through the intricate process of designing and maintaining terrariums—miniature, self-sustaining ecosystems that mimic natural environments. With a focus on sustainability and biodiversity, the workshop covered essential topics such as water cycles, plant growth, and the symbiotic relationships between different species in confined spaces.
Participants were introduced to various techniques for selecting the right plant species, designing the structure of the terrarium, and managing moisture levels for optimal growth. The hands-on approach enabled each attendee to create their closed biosphere, taking home a functional, eco-friendly model of a self-contained environment. The event served not only as an educational platform but also as an inspiration for future sustainable practices in environmental science.
