Nurseries

Nurseries

The forest nursery in KFRI is a facility where young trees and plants are cultivated for reforestation, landscaping, or conservation purposes. These nurseries focus on growing native species and ensuring they are healthy and robust enough for eventual planting in forests or other natural areas. The nursery guarantees the timely availability of planting material to farmers, the general public, and various government departments.

The nursery has a collection of quality planting materials of around 150 species, especially native trees that are in high demand under timber-yielding, fruit-bearing, medicinal, and endemic categories. In addition to the above, the nursery is engaged in handling a number of rare and threatened plant species from the Western Ghats, which are associated with many research programmes conducted by the Institute.

The other major task of the central nursery is establishing the nursery techniques of different forest tree species in association with the KFRI Seed Centre. The data generated in the nursery is used in the ongoing research programmes and is also helpful for all future research.

The Central Nursery is located on the main campus, Peechi. The other forest nurseries of KFRI are at Nilambur and Velupadam campuses. More details about the plants and price of seedlings are available on the Nursery page under the service section of this website.
