Sustainable Forest Management

Sustainable Forest Management

The Division consists of Tree Physiology, Silviculture and Soil Science Departments. The main areas of research of the Division are: seed technology, improved nursery and silvicultural practices, production of better clones and quality planting stock of plantation species, and sustainable forest management.

Besides, studies have also been undertaken on eco-restoration and afforestation of degraded sites, raising green belts in coastal areas, control of riverbank erosion by planting, evaluation of factors affecting plantation productivity, soil nutrient management for important forestry species, composting technology for soil amelioration, and environmental physiology, especially water use, photosynthesis and microclimate. Monitoring weather parameters is also being undertaken by the Division.

Departments

Silviculture Department, KFRI

Silviculture

Silviculture is a crucial aspect of forestry and afforestation programs, focusing on treatments for enhanced productivity. This department links theory with practice, managing plantations, raising nurseries, and establishing live collections of 63 Indian bamboo species. This helps select suitable species for agro-climatic zones and gathers scientific information.

Tree Physiology Department, KFRI

Tree Physiology

The Department of Tree Physiology focuses on seed physiological and biochemical studies of recalcitrant seeds, developing protocols for clonal and seed propagation of threatened trees, and addressing climate change impact on endemic and threatened species. The department has initiated studies on selected red listed trees in the Western Ghats to address the issue.

Soil Science

Soils are crucial for plant-vegetation interactions in forest ecosystems. The Division of Soil Science, established in 1976, has conducted projects on soil properties, erosion, monoculture effects, site factors, and land degradation. They also advise the Kerala Forest Department on field investigations, generating a soil database for forest management.
