Dr. Donald James Honoured with 2025 SAB Young Biotechnologist Award

Dr. Donald James, a distinguished scientist at the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), has been awarded the 2025 SAB Young Biotechnologist Award by the Society for Applied Biotechnology (SAB).
This prestigious award celebrates outstanding young scientists whose innovative research and contributions have significantly propelled the field of applied biotechnology forward. Dr. James was recognised for his creative, impactful, and solution-driven scientific work, demonstrating remarkable potential for real-world applications in biotechnology. The Society for Applied Biotechnology, a renowned body promoting the advancement and dissemination of biotechnology research, selects awardees through a rigorous evaluation process involving peer reviews and scientific impact assessments.
Dr. Donald James’s research focuses on utilising sustainable biotechnologies to improve the health and productivity of forests. His broad area of research interests includes the molecular basis of stress adaptation in forest plant species; plant microbial interactions and metagenomics; endophyte-plant interaction in forest trees; utilizing conventional and new breeding techniques (NBTs) including marker-assisted selection, genomic selection and genome editing for improvement of planted trees and medicinal species; bioprospection and synthetic biology for sustainable production of high value-secondary metabolites. His work has garnered attention in academic and scientific communities for its originality and practical relevance.
