Training Programme on "Promoting Sustainable Tourism in Kerala: Building a Greener Future" Begins at KFRI
A three-day capacity-building training programme titled "Promoting Sustainable Tourism in Kerala: Building a Greener Future" commenced today at the Extension and Training Centre of the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KSCSTE-KFRI), Peechi. The initiative is designed explicitly for Group A/Class I officers of the Kerala Tourism Department.
P. P. Pramod, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) & Field Director, who formally inaugurated the programme. In his address, he emphasised the critical need for integrating sustainability into Kerala's tourism strategies to ensure long-term ecological balance.
Dr. Kannan C. S. Warrier, Director, KFRI, delivered the presidential address, highlighting the pivotal role of research institutions in guiding policy and practice in sustainable development. Dr. A. V. Raghu, Principal Scientist and Training Coordinator of the Extension and Training Division, introduced the objectives and structure of the programme. Dr. Sreejith K. A., Principal Scientist, delivered the vote of thanks.
This training programme is funded by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India. It is part of a broader national effort to promote environmentally responsible tourism. Through expert sessions, field visits, and interactive discussions, the programme aims to equip tourism officers with the knowledge and tools to implement sustainable tourism practices that protect Kerala's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage.
The training will continue over the next two days, focusing on themes such as eco-tourism models, community involvement, and climate-resilient tourism strategies.
